OK, that was not clear to me. I did not realise that the comment I
was replying to relates to that though, ie:

I thought you were referring to his desire to upgrade by editing the
sources. If you were in fact referring to using a VM then that is how
we have been at cross-purposes. Sorry.
I could have phrased my comment better, I was just trying to point out
that if he were to use a VM then it would not prove the point if the
VM did not have the same packages installed as his production system,
in case he did not realise that. I was trying to be helpful, not
FUDful.
