Ahh.

I confess I rarely use floppies now; my current machine doesn't even
have an optical drive.

For one of my machines with an old graphics card that isn't supported
in versions of X.org since about 2011, I sometimes use Crunchbang,
based on Debian stable. It might be an answer.
