I get the impression that it depends on the system you're running it on.

This little netbook computer is running 64-bit Mint Mate 17 but only has
2G memory and an N570 Atom processor. Google Earth does run but
frequently hangs. Next time I use it I'll try using the system monitor
at the same time to see if it runs out of RAM.

My desktop is quite an old machine these days at nearly 8 years old. It
also runs 64-bit Mint Mate 17 but has 4G memory and an AMD X2 processor.
Google Earth usually runs absolutely fine on that machine.
