Follow-up:
Joep, Colin, Nils et al: here is the message that I get from
update-manager whenever there is a Wine (in this case 1.7 from ppa) update:
<http://s29.postimg.org/b5k7us2bb/Screenshot_from_2014_09_29_11_19_27.png>
An error occured, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu
or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong.
The error message was: 'Unknown Error: '<class 'KeyError'>' ("The cache
has no package named 'wine1.7-i386'")'. This usually means
that your installed packages have unmet dependencies.
And of course I do have that package installed:
$ dpkg -l | grep wine1.7
ii wine1.7
1:1.7.26-0ubuntu1~ppa1 amd64
Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer (Binary Emulator and Library)
ii wine1.7-amd64
1:1.7.26-0ubuntu1~ppa1 amd64
Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer (64-bit support)
ii wine1.7-i386
1:1.7.26-0ubuntu1~ppa1 i386
Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer (32-bit support)
$ apt-cache policy wine1.7-i386
wine1.7-i386:i386:
Installed: 1:1.7.26-0ubuntu1~ppa1
Candidate: 1:1.7.27-0ubuntu1
Version table:
1:1.7.27-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu/ trusty/main
i386 Packages
*** 1:1.7.26-0ubuntu1~ppa1 0
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
And the update actually works just fine (as usual), so maybe an
udate-manager bug:
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

So Joep, if you get the same on this Wine update, just go ahead and
upgrade & it should work.
