OK, I've made a little progress. I've discovered that the module
snd_hda_intel has a power-save option that, if enabled, it shuts down the
sound after a while when not in use.  After doing:-
modprobe snd_hda_intel power_save=0 power_save_controller=N
I got sound through the USB connection.

However, the downside is that it only plays for a matter of 5-10 seconds and
then cuts out.  It's as if there's some other power-saving process at work
- or maybe the above power-save option is not properly implemented. There
is another sound card - the nvidia graphics card has sound, but I don't
know whether the module has power-saving features.
