Finally bit the bullet and reinstalled, upgrading to 14.04 (was 13.10).
On thw whole, I like 14,04! A whole bunch of things work better, and the
reinstall got rid of bucketloads of crud I'd been accumulating, so
altogether a good move.
compiz crashes pretty much every time I make a change (in
compiz-settings-manager), but runs stably (with the change) thereafter,
so a minor irritant. I've stuck with Unity - the compiz rotating cube
and expo features make it bearable.
evolution for some reason now switches to the first message in the
folder when the current message is deleted and it is the last message.
Again, a minor irritation.
Initially the system would not come back from suspend (looked OK, but no
keyboard input). I installed the NVidia drivers (which I wanted to do
anyway) and this problem went away. weirdly there was a problem with my
ethernet port that also went away after the NVidia stuff was installed.
Can't explain that one at all.
avconv seems to be much slower converting videos now; can't explain that
one either.
And at last the window controls are back in the title bar where they
belong! However, I have not managed to get them back to the right-hand
corner. The tweak tool setting has no effect as far as I can see, nor
does "gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences button-layout
':minimize,maximize,close'"
Regards, K.
