That is unfortunate.  I routinely use Synaptic for these things since
it seems to handle most installs and removes better than some of the
underlying software (not always, but often enough for me).

I've yet to try the Additional Drivers app - AFAICT I haven't needed it.

I did install the 340.32 driver via Synaptic and it works quite nicely.
