When I needed to increase the size on my drive with an XP VM under
VirtualBox, I seem to remember doing something in the VirtualBox machine
properties to increase the drive size. It did indeed increase the drive
size but XP didn't see it.
What I then did was something like, fire up an Ubuntu VM, install
gparted, get VirtualBox to connect the XP virtual drive to the Ubuntu
VM, and use gparted on the VM to increase the XP partition to fill the
virtual drive.
Sorry, there's a couple of "something like" statements there, but that's
pretty much what I did. Hope it helps with your problem.
