passwords database

When I log onto some sites, I key in my user name and the login fields 
are populated with the completed user name and password.  What program 
is performing this function?  It does not work on all programs.  One 
now, that I use a lot, has an old password that I must correct each 
time.  Can I edit this database?  I have never entered a 'master 
password' on my computer.
