Getting big-cursor to work under Ubuntu

The big-cursor package works fine for me under Debian (where
I use i3 as window manager), but doesn't do anything under
Ubuntu on my dad's machine where he's using icewm and I have
also tested with i3.

Would I have a better chance if I got rid of gnome (which
I'm not using under Debian)?

Any other ideas?
