File system bafflement

My motive for this originally was that root is on a SSD and at the time I
thought that it might be better to have partitions that might be written to
a lot on a normal HD.  I guess that this sort of consideration no longer
applies to modern SSDs.  I'm contemplating getting a new machine with
larger SSDs and may well then put /, /usr, /tmp, and /var all in the one
partition.
