I don't have a machine which would use the iwlwifi driver, so I'm not 
familiar with it. But I would suggest to search at 
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/> if there have been similar problems 
reported with the Trusty kernel. It could be that someone posted a 
solution / workaround.

Did you also uninstall networkmanager? If you don't do that, 
networkmanager and wicd would fight each other attempting to manage the 
wireless interface - and in the end none of them wins.
