What message do you see in the browser, when you cannot access the
internet of course.
What happens if, in a terminal you
ping www.google.com
If you run dmesg when the connection is failing do you see anything
obvious added to dmesg at that time?
Anything in /var/log/syslog that looks suspicious?
Which version of Ubuntu are you using?

I don't understand how it is better with wifi disabled. I would not
have expected it to work at all.
Are you able to run with a wired connection to see whether the problem
exhibits itself there also?
