This is the systemd recommended approach for a variety of reasons and
I agree with it. In my opinion, I believe that modifications to
/etc/hosts should be left up to the administrators discretion and that
dynamic modifications to the hosts file by userspace processes should
not occur. This matches the thinking of the systemd developers [1].

Since systemd is not officially supported yet by Ubuntu, I imagine
that the first stable release will have nss-myhostname utilized by
default. A lot of work is still going in from making the switch from
upstart.
