USB stick not immediately recognised

Thanks.  That didn't seem to be the solution.

However, I've discovered that it is being recognised but not mounted.  If I
click on 'Places' there's an entry for the USB stick but there is no
corresponding entry in /media.  If I click on the 'Places' entry, the stick
is mounted, a nautilus window opens. and there is a subdirectory created
in /media.

So, it seems to be an automount issue.
