Gary, you have no mentioned what the computer is going to be used FOR,
as this would be my first question of the computer's capability (photo
work and other graphics intensive work, mainly web browsing and the odd
email, or some other purpose)

Again, there are lots of distros "based on" Ubuntu without being an
official version "like Ubuntu".

By all means test out live versions of a distro and see what desktop
and window manager looks right for you and your laptop;its the best way.
But always consider whether you like the look of it. For me, when
Unity was introduced into Gnome, or rather became a core component, I
gave up the fight. Nowadays I use Debian "wheezy" with the MATE
desktop on my desktop computer, and NotaLinux on my laptop. NotaLinux
is based on Ubuntu but has the familiar Gnome 2 desktop I am used to,
and both avoid Unity which I still hate. MATE is an official fork of
Gnome2 and makes Gnome3 look and feel like Gnome2.

You ask about Kubuntu; its the official version of Ubuntu with the KDE
desktop. Look these versions up, and others based on Ubuntu; opening up
distrowatch.com is the best way of looking them up.
