External HDD is corrupted

Dave,

Yeah I thought I had something similar with me, except it has 2 cables,
one for power, and one for data, but when I went to dig it out, I only
have the power side of it, must have left the data cable back in
Australia. Will see if I can get something locally, so I can at least
rule the enclosures out.

Pete,

I did install gsmartcontrol, yes. Unfortunately even that wasn't getting
me anywhere.
I agree, things should "just work", and it would be odd for Ubuntu to
have an issue with such a simple device, but who knows, I should at the
very least try and rule it out.

And am still open to any and all other ideas.

Hi,

Just checked on my laptop, and smart data is readable through usb (dock
not enclosure) have you got smartctl installed (and its graphical
frontend gsmartcontrol) I believe it is installed as default now but has
had to be added in the past?!?!

My old laptop drive shows a Temperature fault but has not given up yet
(no I dont trust it with important data, but it still works!)

Hope you solve it as usb HDD's should just work (tm) in my experience I
have never had an USB enclosure or dock that has not played well with
Ubuntu (maybe I'm just lucky :¬) )
