Not silly at all - I was wondering exactly the same thing. I've bought
two of these

http://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e11400.m1842.l3160/7?euid=fb887907de9b4c18997b7167cd970b68&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.co.uk%2Fws%2FeBayISAPI.dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D320955375179%26ssPageName%3DADME%3AL%3AOC%3AGB%3A3160

one for me running Ubuntu the other for a friend running Mint. They both
work perfectly. Mine gets used with an ext4 formatted drive, hers with
the XP drive pulled from the laptop before I put in a new one to install
Mint.
