Lots of errors but nothing critical, but I cannot see any sign of the
Ethernet chipset being detected at all.

I think Marty's advice is good. I would try a newer kernel.

As per this page:

The command should be:

`sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-raring`

(for the kernel from 13.04)

or

`sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-saucy`

(for the kernel from 13.10).
