Do you see any sort of lights on the port when something is plugged in? 
(Assuming the other side of the cable is also plugged in.)

Also, did this port work before?  On Windows?  Other Linux distro? 
Before upgrades?

It may be a long shot, but I'd just BIOS as well.  In case there's some 
weird setting that disables it.
