USN-2124-1 (OpenJDK-6) has regressed..?

We run a fleet a 12.04 servers internally and in production. A rather old
Java application that runs continuously on a number of these began behaving
differently from last Friday morning, right after the servers report the
installation of USN-2124-1.
An investigation shows they each connect to various MySQL machines via JDBC
during routine operations. At random, the connections stop disconnecting
normally, and instead go to what MySQL's "show processlist" command show as
SLEEP. At this point the MySQL servers exhaust the connections permitted
and the end result is no-one else able to connect.
Prior to last Friday, the application instances had been running for years
without incidents. Now, we are constantly having to restart them while
adding debugging statements around their SQL instructions.
Has anyone else observed similar behaviour? We are having a hard time
believing this is exclusive to us. I'm also not entirely certain where to
address to concerns otherwise.
Thanks,
James
