Startup Disk Creator fails to create bootloader

I'm running into something almost exactly like:

the Startup Disk Creator will copy files, and then, at the end, prompt 
for admin password, and then fail to create the boot record (kinda the 
point).

There's no log I can find.

I've tried a few times.  This is on 14.04; I've also tried unetbootin but 
am trying yet again.
