As I understand it (not being an IT guy) - .bash_aliases is in the file system
but one doesn't need to go into root to add/edit aliases. The .bashrc file
refers to it by default... avoiding editing .bashrc is sensible. Also sensible
to have aliases all in one place. I have my apt-get ones there as well as loads
for imagemagick which I use for bulk photo 'processing' e.g. resizing,
watermarking.

No need to use root at all from what I can gather on xubuntu 13.10 (just about
to upgrade). As already mentioned above.
