To obtain root access using the GUI/desktop and a file manager do the
following:

Open a terminal then enter:
sudo apt-get install gksu

Once it is installed you press key combination ALT-F2
type : gksu nautilus
in the box then press enter.
You will be prompted for the sudo password which you enter then press
enter key.

Now you will have root access to the entire computer. If you delete
something you may have to reinstall the package or the entire system
again so be very careful.
