It detects the hardware assigned to the VM and boots in the VM. And should
see the virtual drive to clone. 

Copying file-by-file works too. You could boot a live cd/dvd like the Ubuntu
desktop, and use it to connect to network shares or copy files from drive to
drive. 

Or let us know if you discover a better solution.
