Can not help you much.  I use a VPN.  On my 12.04 machine I have to supply
the ring password.  This is an extra security measure.  On my 14.04 machine
this is not required.O both machines I connect to the internet wirelessly
without having to enter any passwood.

Once I enter that ring password I do not have to enter any other passwords
to connect to the vpn provided I have that connection's password saved
previously.

I think you should check with your VPN provider.  They might have a
suggestion.   I use Private internet access, which works very well.
HideMyass was a pain in the ass.
