This is exactly what shred does. By the way, there is no need to do
multiple passes any more, not unless you are extremely paranoid. One
pass writing random data is enough. Certainly enough for the OP's needs.
DBAN's only real extra feature is that it is automatic. Boot it and it
will wipe everything it can find. Not that useful for personal use.
shred gives you much more control - you can shred a single file, for
example.
