screen size not detected

I am using ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

For some reason, I am now finding that when ubuntu boots up, it fails to detect that my monitor is wide screen.

System Settings - Screen Display reports a resolution 1024x768 (4:3)

I would like to know what the underlying problem is and how to resolve it
