This SOUNDS like you're talking about something I JUST did.. I JUST
last week received a computer with Ubuntu preinstalled so I've been
playing around in it. When I started to transfer camera images (and
videos) via USB, each time it would ask what it should do.

Ubuntu was offering Shotwell as default but I prefer working out of a
file manager, with Nautilus becoming set as default there. If that
sounds even slightly familiar in your case, try going to Settings and
look at "Details" then "Removeable Media" and see if you can't change
what you need there, too......
