nfs broken after upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04

NFS server not working properly after upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04 from
10.04.  there was a strange issue during upgrade preventing nfs-common
et.al. from being upgraded... had to remove portmap to fix that but i
still cannot connect to the server from the client.  don't see any
errors but not sure where else to look besides dmesg?

looks like everything is OK but when i try to access the server from the
client (using ls e.g.) i get an extreme delay and eventually a "ls:
cannot open directory X: No such file or directory"
