Thanks for all the replies.
Seems like it should make little difference whether it's a word
processor or a text editor in use.
I'm not going to be taking the covers off this machine again any time
soon, though. It took all of my powers of persuasion to get her to give
up the windows habit so best not mess about with it any more.
Interesting suggestion to switch off the WiFi to save power. I've never
thought about doing this, but will certainly see if it is possible.
The comment about getting XP service pack 3 was for people like me and
her, who want a copy of XP available for use in future "just in case!".
For anybody who'd like to do a fresh install of XP under VirtualBox or
whatever, then have it completely up to date before the end of support,
if you've got a copy of the installer with SP2, the windows update
service WILL NOT WORK! You need to manually download and install SP3
first. Yes I know this is the Ubuntu list, but this is something I
discovered while supporting a new Linux user, so it might be useful to
others in a similar situation.
