Lost Unity 3D

Gave my daughter a Thinkpad Edge a while ago. It had been running Unity
3D. Today she tried to run VBox and got an error about graphics and it
was suggested she reboot. After doing so she noticed the launcher icons
were large and figured out she was in Unity 2D.

Graphics is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225/4250.

She remembers responding to a Software Update in the last couple of days
but is unsure whether or not she has rebooted until today.

Googling suggests that she may have upgraded to a version that no longer
supports that chipset. The suggested fix is to use an earlier kernel
but I tried that and still no unity 3D.

I will have access to the machine for a while so I wonder if anyone has
any ideas of how to get Unity 3D back?

Thanks, Jim
