I don't think it's the /identical/ problem, but if the issue is caused
by a comparable problem with a driver that's now a "legacy" one, it
might be /like/ it.

I don't know if ATI/AMD do multiple legacy drivers as nVidia do. I
used to have machines that would only work with the version 92 nVidia
driver, or the v153, or the v174 and so on, depending on how old their
GPU was. But at least the nVidia driver worked with newer releases of
XFree86 or whatever the X server was back then.
