You still leave me to Google the machine myself to find out the CPU by

I suggest that you read this:

It appears to be a Core 2 Duo, about 1.83GHz. I doubt that you'll see
much difference between LibreOffice and Gedit on such a system.

If you have a version of MS Office, note that you could probably run
it effectively under WINE. This will be a lot more efficient than via
a VM.

Well that would certainly save a lot of time. So does manually
downloading and installing IE8; this means WindowsUpdate will not
patch IE6 with 100+ security hotfixes /then/ upgrade it. WindowsUpate
itself also seems quicker under IE8 to me.
