The problem is not the restarting of X or any other desktop use. The
problem is either with the driver or the settings of whatever software
used to control the sound card input and output. You might want to open
up a terminal and type alsamixer to see if the settings have been set to
mute or the volumes are set low. Use the arrow keys to navigate left,
right , up & down.
Despite your experiences the problem is going to be the software mixer,
not the desktop you use. Or maybe the driver, but that is rare.
