You don't have to erase it. However, it is possible, even likely, that
Windows will mess with it in one way or another. The point is that it is
not safe to do this without a good backup anyway.
Some versions of Windows automatically and unconditionally reformat and
occupy the entire hard drive. I think OEM versions do this.
It is also certain that Windows will set up its own boot loader. There's
no avoiding that. You're going to have to reinstall grub.
In the end, I think you're going to either install Windows in a virtual
machine, or else install Windows and then reinstall Ubuntu.
