New ntp install from tarball

Greetings all;
I just installed ntp-4.2.8 in the default /usr/local prefix, and adjusted
the stuff in /etc/init.d/ntp, and in /etc/defaults/ntp, and its working,
but neither I nor my watch script seem to be able to locate a "drift" or
"ntp.drift" file that the default 10.04.4 LTS version kept in the
/var/lib/ntp subdir.
I have setup a duplicate directory and file in /var/local/lib/ntp, all
owned by ntp:ntp, but it is not being updated, and neither is the old
location's file.
Does anyone have a clue where this file, specified in /etc/default/ntp is
actually being kept now?
Cheers, Gene Heskett
