I think you have to reformat it and tell the format routine what file-system to install.
The easiest way to deal with such things is GParted, and that's most useful if you download
a live version of it and burn it to a CD or to a flash drive, if your machine will boot on a
flash drive. Just be careful what disk and partition you select to modify, or you could wipe
out your system!
