Skype woes

Colin, I thank you for your efforts to get me Skyping again, but the
message you were responding to above was a simple factual statement.

I did read the rest of your message. I did not find these facts
surprising. I know I need to upgrade. Lots of people have said so and I
surmised as much myself in an earlier message. I also read the other
messages explaining in helpful detail the facts as I had provided them.
I am grateful for those explanations - I have learned several things
about apt-cache and apt-get that I didn't know before.

It should simply not be possible to install from a 4.3 .deb and end up
with a broken 4.2. As far as I am concerned Skype 4.3 is not packaged
properly, and from the apparently quite widespread difficulties people
have had with upgrading to version 4.3, I am probably not alone in that
assessment.

In summary (for me at least) I will install Skype again after upgrading,
and will live without it until then, A surprisingly easy thing to do, as
it turns out.
