There is a wubi.exe in the main directory of the CD. That is a program
to install *Ubuntu inside the Windows partition. I have used it only
once many years ago, so I don't remembder the details, but maybe it also
allows you to install to a separate partition.

And then there is still the option to do a release upgrade without a
fresh install. I know that many persons prefer a fresh install or have
problems with the online upgrade, but I have used it many times and I
would always prefer that option.
