Skype woes

Skype for Linux, 4.3.0.37-1 is causing me grief.

I downloaded it, installed it using the software centre and all seemed
to go well, but when run it displayed version 4.2 and said "Skype can't
connect".

So I used "apt-get remove skype", and that too seemed to go well. Trying
to run skype failed, no such command.

Then I installed again, this time using dpkg. Again all seemed to go
well. When run from the command line with the "--version" option it
reports "Skype 4.3.0.37", but the login window it opens when run
normally is "Skype 4.2 for Linux".

Further attempts to install from the downloaded .deb file led into
dependency hell (which is odd, that didn't happen the first couple of
times).

Is there a quick fix? Plenty of people seem to be using the later
version...

Regards, K.
