Cannot download trusty updates

I've a fresh install of trusty x64. The software updater tells me I have
updates to install, but when I tell it to proceed and provide my password,
it fails and tells me to check my internet connection. That's the same
connection I use to send this email, so if you're reading this, it works.
I can update things manually with synaptic, and it works without a hitch.
Has anybody else seen this?
