Trusty: chrome and flash won't work for me

I'm just moving up to Trusty xubuntu. I've got a fresh install on my AMD
64-bit machine. I've run into a snag with chromium, my favorite browser.
When I go to http://bigfarm.goodgamestudios.com/?country=US and click to
log in, I immediately get a window asking me to install a flash player.
I'm unable to comply.
OTOH, firefox works okay.
I've tried updating flashplayer-installer to no avail; it seems to update
but the behavior of chrome does not change. Trying to download and install
something manually just freezes as soon as I try to install.
I'm sure there's more details that might help, but I don't know which ones,
and I'm hoping someone else has seen this and already knows how to fix it.
