Gmail and Thunderbird

I've set up a new account using Thunderbird's automatic process which 
was quite easy to do. Unfortunately, after the "done" button was pressed 
I'm told that either the username or password is not correct. I can 
access my account via Google's web page using the same username and 
password so that's not the problem.

A google search shows that this is a common problem and that the IMAP 
settings should be edited under "settings" within the gmail account. I 
cannot find any mention of imap anywhere under my account setting. Am I 
looking in the wrong place or is the answer somewhere else?
