Ubuntu and Printers

I have Ubuntu installed on a Lenovo R61 laptop.  I can browse the weband 
download email in thunderbird.

I am now trying to install printers Epsom XP100, Samsung CPL320 and 
Brother HL 22.
I started with the Epson . It recognized the printer on the Usb port . 
It found an epson (201202w)driver which it downloaded.  The install 
process showed no movement in the progress bar even after 30 minutes and 
so I cancelled it. I then retried and selected Local Driver. After 
selection this option again nothing happened for 20 minutes. I then 
rebooted the computer and started again with the Samsung printer.
This time it gave me a choice gutenprint or a local driver. I chose 
gutenprint and clicked on forward. It asked for authentication and then 
proceded.
At the install stage the progress bar remained static.and after 20 
minutes I stopped the process. I repeated it with selecting local driver

I repeated with the brother printer. This time the install was successful.

Can any one tell me what I am missing with the Samsung and the Epson 
printers?
