But since Ubuntu was and continued to be unresponsive, I chose to 
install xubuntu.
It does not really matter, since "installing the OS" is as far as I ever 
got with Linux (after several years of trying).
I cannot really recall having seen ANYTHING that simply works without 
causing very frustrating, prolonged trouble.

So, I installed xubuntu. Except that I cannot get the Japanese input to 
work here either,
The machine is working fine so far.
I assume, there cannot be problems with the heat sink or dust blockage; 
or the memory for that matter.

I am afraid, I need to bother the list with more questions.
