You misunderstand what is going on. The vertical row of icons you see on the
lefy of your screen are NOT desktop icons. The vertical row is a *launcher*,
very much like the (typically) horizontal launcher of the current incarnation
of (Mac)OS-X. Ubuntu's 'Unity' desktop system has lifted ideas more from
(Mac)OS-X than MS-Windows (including what it does with menubars).
It is possible to install alternive desktop systems (eg GNome, KDE, etc.) that
have a more 'MS-Windows' flavor, which might be more to your liking.
