Using an ASUS eeePC netbook 1000 I have not been able to upgrade to the
newer version of Ubuntu. (N.B. I did succeed on my other ASUS eeePC netbook
1005).

Error message keeps coming up that there is not enough disk space on the
root directory.

I have freed up copious amounts of disk space and emptied the trash over
the past day, but I still get exactly the same error message:

Not enough free disk space
The upgrade has aborted.
The upgrade needs a total of 3.377 M of free space on disk '/'
Please free at least an additional space of 2.528 M on disk '/'
Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations
using sudo apt- get clean.
