USB memory stick question - solved

That's exactly what I was getting at, an incompatibility problem. The 
smallest USB memory stick that the local store sells is 8 GB and I 
didn't think of making a smaller partition. Just for interest sake, I'll 
give it a go.

Anyway, problem solved! I burnt a copy of disk-repair to a DVD via an 
external USB disk drive and although the internal disk won't write I 
discovered that it does read, at least on this occasion.

So my wife's game machine is now back to normal.
