I'm now baffled.  I've just done
 sudo update-grub
and it says
"Found Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (14.04) on /dev/sdd1"

The problem with this is that Ubuntu root is on /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdd1 is a
USB drive that I use for backups and which is not normally mounted.
